In addition to physical benefits, playing team sports, such as basketball, is beneficial for young people. Studies have revealed that academic performance and physical activity are correlated. In a Kansas University study that looked into the academic performance of students in the 9th-12th grade, researchers discovered that 97 percent of student-athletes successfully finished high school. This figure is 10 percent higher than the percentage of students who never participated in sports. Moreover, the study found that student-athletes have higher grade point averages than nonathletes. Student-athletes also demonstrate better emotional development. The Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute published a research study that found that a unique state of short-term relaxation is achieved through physical activity. Relaxation leads to improved mood, enhanced creativity, increased concentration, better memory, and effective problem-solving. The study concluded that these benefits extend into the student-athletes’ classroom. |
